Kingdom Politics | A Kingdom From Another Place
Monday Oct 12, 2020
Monday Oct 12, 2020
In the first sermon from our new Kingdom Politics series, Pastor Joel talks about why Christian engagement in politics is so difficult and why we need Kingdom civics instead of partisan ones.
Acts 17 tells us pagans viewed the Christians as “turning the world upside down,” following a different king than Caesar. Today, Christians often aren’t turning the world upside down, but instead look just like any other members of political parties. Christians should baffle the political order by refusing to be categorized neatly into established boxes.
In this important sermon, we discuss what it means to be about the kingdom of God while still engaging politically in this complex time.

Sunday Sep 27, 2020
John’s stunning account of the resurrection tells us many things about its significance and why it has enduring importance for Christians and the rest of the world. In this sermon Pastor Joel explains its importance to us in regards to how we view God when things look terrible, in how it’s a credible account for Jesus actually being raised, in how Jesus’s resurrection body is the blueprint for our own someday, and in what it teaches us about how Jesus reveals himself to us.

Endgame | The King in His Splendor
Monday Sep 21, 2020
Monday Sep 21, 2020
The crucifixion narrative in the book of John is just that: a narrative. Which means that it conveys the significance of the death of Jesus through details implanted in a story.
In this sermon, Pastor Joel gives three details that offer significance to Jesus’s death:
(1) That Jesus defeats his enemy by shedding his own blood, not theirs
(2) That Jesus remains faithful while his disciple Peter (representing us) is faithless
(3) That we see both God and man at work in the story, both working towards their own ends
When we put these three clues together, we see what John wants us to know about the death of the Word of God.
Hint: it is good news for ears weary of their own mistakes and beaten down by the world’s bullies.

Jesus’s final prayer before his climactic trip to the cross is for the unity of the church. How does the church realize the vision of unity in Jesus’s prayer? What are similarities and differences between ‘biblical unity’ and modern ideals of ‘equality?’ How do we think about the many differences Christians have among themselves? What mechanism is in the church that makes sure the marginalized are given special care and attention? And how is Jesus our power source and model to make all of this happen?
In this important sermon, Pastor Joel — with an assist from the Apostle Paul — unpacks the incredible vision of unity baked into the church.

The Room Where It Happened | The Pioneer of Heaven
Sunday Aug 30, 2020
Sunday Aug 30, 2020
Jesus, in the room with his disciples, begins to hint and even outright say he will die and leave them. The disciples are naturally unsettled by the prospect of his absence. So Jesus offers them three comforts that we discuss in this sermon.
First, he exhorts them to presence his love to each and the world. Second, he explains he isn't leaving for no purpose, but for their benefit--to, like the American pioneers, trailblaze a place for the disciples to follow him to. Thus, Jesus says he is the only way to God, and in the sermon we discuss whether or not all roads lead to God/heaven. And third, Jesus explains he will send his Holy Spirit to be his voice to lead us along the path he had set for us.
